..................................................................................................................................

With the cost of food constantly rising over the last year, here are some great money saving ideas from Frugal Fred to bring your weekly shopping bill down without having to go hungry!

1)        Supermarket own brand goods.
Many of the major supermarkets have a range of own brand, from your basic everyday items such as Tea, bread, milk etc. through to luxury items like Champagne. Many of these items are produced by the same supplier as other more expenses brands but have different labels. Give own brand goods a try as often the taste will be same and the only difference you will notice is the price.

2)        Bulk buy.
Stock up on essential items such as Tea, toilet rolls, washing powder, soaps etc when they are on special offer at the supermarket. All the big supermarkets have offers just as 'buy two, get one free', buy one, get 2nd half price'. Be careful not to buy goods that are date sensitive as you may end up wasting your money.

3)        Buy local.
Whether it's at your local farmers market, convenience store or supermarket, buy items that are produced or sourced locally. These are often cheaper and fresher and you will also be supporting your local economy.

4)        Luxury goods.
If you really want to reduce your weekly grocery bill, cut back on those little indulgences such as chocolate, wine, beer and cakes as these are often the most expensive items you buy each week. If you really a treat, buy own brand luxury items as these are often considerably cheaper than branded goods.

5)        Seasonal foods.
Looking for a mango in December? Buying food that is in season will certainly be cheaper as supply is constant sourced closer to home. By buying in season produce, you will also help the environment as the supermarket will not need to buy from abroad.

6)        Always make a list.
Take the time to plan what you really need to buy this week and budget. This way you can reduce the temptation to buy items you don't really need and keep your spending under control.

7)        Look for bargains.
Supermarkets, often reduce many items that are nearing their sell by date for a quick sale.  Evenings are the best time to find these bargains on meat, fish and other fresh goods. Remember, to only buy what you are going to use or eat within a few days of the sell-by date, you may also be able to freeze some items.

8)        Reward points.
Use the reward points from the supermarket to get money offer your shopping bill and don't forget to use the money off vouchers that they often send.

9)        Meat and two veg or No meat and three veg?
As meat is an expensive item, consider changing your diet. Perhaps cut out 1-2 meat dishes a week and increase your vegetable intake. You can also replace a meat dish with fish, as this can be a healthier and cheaper alternative.

10)        Grow your own fruit and veg!
Don't need an allotment or a big garden, with a simple pot or window box, there are many vegetable and fruits you can grow yourself at home. Don't need to have green fingers either, as there are many books, websites and magazines that all offer tips on growing your own fresh fruit and vegetables.
